Graywolf Press is a literary press that publishes about thirty books annually, mostly collections of poetry, memoir, essays, novels, and short stories. Our editors are looking for high quality literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that combine a distinct voice with a distinct vision.

 

Graywolf Press seeks an organized, detail-oriented person for the position of Development and Events Assistant. 


Graywolf Press is a nonprofit publisher of risk-taking, visionary writers who transform culture through literature. We publish thirty to thirty-five books each year, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and works in translation. Our hybrid, nineteen-person staff is based primarily in Minneapolis, Minnesota.


The Development and Events Assistant is a nonexempt, full-time (forty hours/week) position and requires physical presence in Graywolf’s Minneapolis office Monday–Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Friday. 


This position supports Graywolf’s fundraising and engagement efforts by managing donor data and communications and playing a key role with events organized by the development team. This position is responsible for donation processing, fundraising communications, and event logistics, and furthers the overall work of the department on a variety of additional tasks as a vital member of the larger Graywolf team.


This position is designed for someone who is interested in a career in development and/or fundraising.


The salary range for this position is $42,000–$45,000 annually, depending on experience. Compensation includes paid time off; health and dental insurance, as well as short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance with all employee premiums paid 100 percent by Graywolf; paid parental leave; and a fully subsidized transit pass. Graywolf employees are eligible for retirement benefits after one year of service. Start date for this position is June 2024.


Job Responsibilities


Individual Fundraising and Engagement

· Manage all donor records. Administer and maintain accurate data entry and information in the fundraising database (Salsa).

· Process and properly acknowledge all gifts, contributions, and pledges.

· Update dashboard and other fundraising tracking tools.

· Conduct monthly reconciliations between development and accounting records.

· Coordinate aspects of fundraising efforts as part of the development team; help craft the case for support, draft acknowledgement letters, pull donor lists, and coordinate printing and mailing of letters.

· Coordinate the monthly development e-newsletter; coordinate with staff, board members, authors, and others to produce content.

· Implement other strategies for individual fundraising as directed.

 

Fundraising Events

· Work with Advancement Director to support planning and logistics for the development department’s fundraising and stewardship events, including board meetings, National Council meetings, committee meetings, and prospect meetings. Tasks may include executing invitation mailings, designing promotional materials, tracking RSVPs, ordering catering, greeting guests, leading technical support for virtual and in-person events, and other logistics as directed. 

· In partnership with the rest of the development team and members of the marketing and publicity team, participate in a Signature Events Planning Group that executes the annual Graywolf Literary Fundraising event and other unique cross-department events.

 

Galley Club Coordination

· Act as the in-house liaison for members of the Graywolf Galley Club.

· Manage monthly recurring donations and ensure Galley Club membership lists are up-to-date.

· With input from other staff, help select titles for inclusion in the Galley Club (including planning and ordering promotional items for inclusion), and craft communications to members.

· Plan and execute an annual Galley Club party, with assistance from the development team.

 

Administration and Support 

· Maintain supplies and equipment for the development team and development projects.

· Assist the Director and Publisher, Advancement and Operations Director, and Director of Strategic Initiatives as needed.

· Engage as a representative of the development team with Graywolf’s internship program and interns as needed, including overseeing interns’ work on development tasks and projects as assigned.

 

Miscellaneous 

· Perform other duties as assigned. 


Experience, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities


Required:

· At least one year of experience working in a development or fundraising capacity for a nonprofit organization, or equivalent experience.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Experience organizing virtual and/or live events.

· Residence in the Twin Cities area or the ability to relocate here.

· Strong organizational skills, keen attention to details, the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and the ability to accomplish tasks with a high degree of autonomy.

· High level of comfort with Mac OS and Microsoft Office suite and other basic office technology.

· Previous experience working with contact databases and data entry.

· Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with our small staff, board of directors, and as part of a team.

 

Preferred:

· Graphic design experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar.

· Comfort with virtual event platforms (Zoom, Crowdcast, or similar), and experience providing technical support for those platforms.

· Experience with Constant Contact, MailChimp, or similar email management software.


Physical Demands

 

Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

· Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.

· Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes. 

· Must be able to carry and lift boxes of books and other materials.
